Welcome!

If you are interested in applying to our graduate program, please fill out the form provided, HERE. Included on the form is a place to indicate that, based on financial need, you would like to request a fee waiver for your application through the graduate school. This will come as a reimbursment after your application has been submitted.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Mississippi State University is always looking for new, enthusiastic graduate students.  We currently have a diverse student body of 48 students from 12 countries: Bangladesh, China, Eritrea, Ghana, India, Iran, Nepal, Nigeria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and USA [for Fall 2018].  We have also had successful students from Cameroon, Turkey, Russia, etc.  The 17 research-active faculty offer research opportunities in Nuclear Physics, Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Astronomy and Computational Physics.  We offer both MS and PhD programs.  The MS program has a thesis and a non-thesis option.  For the PhD program we offer both a Physics PhD (under the College of Arts & Sciences) and an Engineering/Applied Physics PhD (under the Bagley College of Engineering).

An interested international student should try to complete the application by February 1 for Fall admission in order to receive full attention.  The deadline for domestic students is July 1.  The department has the policy to only admit a student if we can offer that student an assistantship (teaching or research assistant).  We do, in general, not offer Spring admission.  Applications should be made through the link found on the Graduate School website.  Inquiries regarding admission, required documents, etc. should be addressed to the Physics and Astronomy Department Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Henk Arnoldus (hfa1@msstate.edu).
